Planning Around Shoreline Weather and Water Rules

Puget Sound summers are dry, and the rest of the year is wet with the odd hard freeze. At Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac), the nearest NOAA normals station we use for Shoreline, the first frost arrives around November 23 in a typical year, and by November 6 in about one year in ten. Both of Shoreline's water providers also require backflow assemblies to be tested every year by a state-certified tester. We plan around these dates and rules from the first visit.

Built for Puget Sound weather

Why Shoreline Sprinkler Systems Fail

Puget Sound summers are dry enough that a lawn goes brown in a few weeks without water, and the rest of the year brings months of rain and the odd hard freeze. A system that isn't set up for both runs too much, too little, or cracks over winter.

Heads spaced too far apart leave dry patches, and zones that run too long leave puddles. We test your water pressure, match each zone to the plants it waters, and set run times for the soil in your yard.

Backflow Testing and Permits in Shoreline

A lawn sprinkler system is a cross-connection to your drinking water. Shoreline is served by two water utilities: Seattle Public Utilities generally west of I-5 and North City Water District generally east of I-5. Rules differ by water provider, and we check yours before any work starts.

Tested Every Year

Both providers require backflow assemblies to be tested every year by a Washington State certified Backflow Assembly Tester (BAT).

Report Goes to Your Provider

North City Water District asks you to send it a copy of each year's test result. On Seattle Public Utilities service, the tester sends the report directly to SPU.

New Assemblies and Repairs

Seattle Public Utilities requires new assemblies to be inspected and tested before use, and retested after any repair or replacement. Within Shoreline, the City of Shoreline is the plumbing authority.

Questions

Shoreline Sprinkler & Irrigation FAQ

How much does sprinkler repair cost in Shoreline?

It depends on what failed. A broken head is a small fix, while a failed valve or a cracked main line takes more time and parts. We find the cause first and give you the price before any work starts.

When should I winterize my sprinkler system in Shoreline?

Before the first freeze. At Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac), the nearest NOAA normals station we use for Shoreline, the first frost arrives around November 23 in a typical year, and by November 6 in about one year in ten, so booking in October is safest. Water left in the lines can freeze and crack pipes, valves and the backflow preventer.

Does my sprinkler system need backflow testing in Shoreline?

Yes. Shoreline has two water providers. North City Water District, generally east of I-5, requires assemblies to be tested every year by a state-certified Backflow Assembly Tester and a copy of the result sent to the district. Seattle Public Utilities, generally west of I-5, requires a yearly test by a certified tester, a retest after any repair or replacement, and an inspection and test for new assemblies. We check which provider serves your address.

Can you fix a sprinkler system someone else installed?

Yes. We repair systems no matter who installed them. If a zone is worth redesigning instead of patching, we tell you before any work starts.

Do you install new sprinkler systems in existing yards?

Yes. We design zones around your lawn, beds and water pressure, install the system, and test every zone before we leave. New sprinkler installations come with an 18-month warranty.

Can you add a smart controller to my system?

In most cases, yes. A smart controller adjusts watering to the weather, so the system skips a cycle after rain and waters more during a dry August. It usually connects to the valves you already have.

Why is my lawn soggy when the sprinklers are off?

Usually it is one of two things: a leaking valve or line that lets water seep out between cycles, or poor drainage that keeps rainwater sitting in the soil. We check the irrigation first, then the grading and drainage, and fix whichever one is the cause.

Is Grizzly a licensed contractor?

Yes. Grizzly Landscape & Construction LLC is registered with Washington L&I as contractor GRIZZLC755LL, and is bonded and insured. You can look the number up on L&I's Verify a Contractor tool.

Do you install French drains in Shoreline?

Yes. We install French drains, catch basins and downspout lines, and regrade areas where water runs toward the house. Planning drainage and irrigation together means the trenches are dug once.

How do I get an estimate?

Call (425) 648-9443 or send your name and number through the form. Estimates are free, and we walk the property with you before we quote.
