If water pressure drops, water can flow backward from your sprinkler lines into your home's supply. The backflow preventer is the one part that stops it.
Most homes with sprinklers in Snohomish and King County have one of three assemblies: a double check valve, a pressure vacuum breaker or a reduced pressure assembly. Which one you need depends on your system and your water district.
After an install or repair, we check the assembly and run your system to make sure everything works.
Backflow preventers sit above ground, so they're usually the first part to crack in a freeze. Draining yours every fall and covering it through cold snaps can save you a replacement in spring.

A backflow preventer is a valve that stops water from your sprinkler system from flowing back into your home's drinking water. It protects your family and the public water supply from fertilizer, pesticides, and bacteria.
Backflow testing checks that your backflow preventer's valves and seals are working correctly. A certified tester uses special gauges to test the assembly, and results are reported to your water provider.
Yes. Washington requires backflow assemblies on irrigation systems to be tested every year by a state-certified tester. Your water provider usually sends a notice when your test is due.
Signs include water leaking or spraying from the assembly, low water pressure in your sprinklers, or a failed annual test. Freeze damage is a common cause, especially on assemblies that weren't drained before winter.
The assembly usually needs new seals or springs, or in some cases a full replacement. After the repair, it's retested and the passing result is submitted to your water provider.
